Kate Moss in a crushed velvet jacket – 1998

I truly never thought that I would see fashions from the 1990s coming back in 2016, but many of the trends for this season are inspired by the best aspects of that decade. As a girl in college, I see 90s trends everywhere. From crop tops and mom jeans, to chokers and slip dresses, these styles are the go-to for a stylish night-out look. Another amazing style from the 90s that I am seeing young women wear is velvet and crushed velvet. At first I was a bit horrified, as it reminded me of the dreadful velvet gaucho pants I used to wear as a child. But as I see trendsetters like Danielle Bernstein rock this fabric, the updated version is actually pretty sexy.

There are dozens of different ways to wear velvet, but remember when wearing this bold trend, try to keep it to a minimum. This means wearing one article of clothing that is made out of this luxurious material. Also, it looks fantastic when you keep the rest of the outfit simple and let the velvet make the statement.

Whether you’re willing to try this trend with a simple velvet choker or crushed velvet thigh-high boots, gather some inspiration from the styles below!
